Finlan Chosen to Lead Men's Golf at Wheeling

WHEELING, W. Va. (July 28)- Michael Finlan has been hired as the new Head Coach of the Wheeling University Men's Golf program. Finlan takes over for Joe Key, who had a one-year stint at the helm of the program.

"I'm grateful to have this opportunity to coach collegiate golf at Wheeling," Finlan said. "I'm thankful to my dad, who taught me the game growing up and all my friends and family who I've played with and learned from over my career. I'm excited to get started and build the program the best I can."

Finlan is no stranger to Wheeling's athletic department, as he was brought on as a pitching coach for the baseball program last season. In 2021, Finlan's hurlers were instrumental in the team's remarkable season, which featured the most wins in and saves in a single season in program history. Finlan had three pitchers named to the All-MEC team and one placed on the NCWBA, D2CCA, and ABCA/Rawlings All-Atlantic teams. He will remain the pitching and strength and conditioning coach for the baseball program. Finlan also is a baseball coach at The Highlands Sports Complex in nearby Triadelphia.

Wheeling University Director of Athletics Carrie Hanna said, "We are excited to have Michael Finlan directing our Men's Golf program. We look forward to the leadership he will provide to our student-athletes in their pursuit of excellence on the course, as well as in the classroom and community."

Prior to Wheeling, Finlan was an assistant baseball coach for three years at Glenville State and had a short stint at Ohio Valley University.

Finlan attended Marietta College, where he originally planned on joining the golf team, but pursued baseball instead. He made 14 starts for the Pioneers and held a record of 6-5 over two seasons.

Finlan is a native of State College, Pennsylvania and currently resides in Wheeling.
