Charleston Baseball Takes Two from WLU
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston baseball team flexed its Mountain East Conference South Division-leading muscles here Saturday in taking a pair of games from West Liberty at the Welch Athletic Complex.
The Golden Eagles (17-3, 11-1) combined two impressive pitching performances with some timely hitting to sweep the Hilltoppers (8-11, 6-6) by scores of 9-0 and 10-1 to run their MEC winning streak to eight games.
In the opener, the hosts were clinging to a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth before their bats heated up. Charleston plated three runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth and added a pair of insurance tallies in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Three Golden Eagle hurlers teamed up on a six-hit shutout, striking out 10 and walking three. Jason Schutte had two of West Liberty's six hits.
The second game followed a similar path. After Charleston snapped a 1-1 deadlock with a single run in the bottom of the third, Hayden Cartt launched a three-run home run over the left field fence to fuel a four-run fourth inning and UC went on to complete the sweep.
Charleston pounded out 10 hits with six of them going for extra bases. Two Golden Eagle pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts with just two walks while holding the Hilltopper offense to just two singles.
The Hilltoppers return to MEC North Division play on Saturday when they host Notre Dame (Ohio) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Kovalick Field.
