Wheeling Softball Splits with Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. (April 11) - A complete-game performance by freshman pitcher Casey Kemp (Blanchester, Ohio/Little Miami) helped the Wheeling University softball team earn a split at Glenville State Sunday afternoon.

Wheeling won the first game 6-2, before falling 5-1 in the finale.

The Cardinals (8-18) trailed 2-0 entering the fifth inning of game one, but plated two runs to tie the game.

Wheeling scored four times on four hits in the sixth inning to take the lead. The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out and got an RBI-single from freshman Maddie Munoz (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) to pull out in front. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Hradek (Perry, Ohio/Perry) gave the Cardinals insurance with a bases-clearing double to make the score 6-2.

Kemp earned her first-collegiate win after limiting the Pioneers to two runs (zero earned) on three hits with four strikeouts.

Hradek led the team with three RBI, while Munoz, sophomore first baseman Gina Fogle (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) and redshirt-freshman Jenee Brodeur (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) each finished with two hits.

Glenville State pounded out 12 hits to score a 5-1 win in game two.

The Cardinals trailed 2-0 in the fourth inning, when redshirt-freshman Autumn Oehlstrom (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) smacked her sixth home run of the season to make it a 2-1 game.

Glenville State put the game away with three more runs in the fifth inning to claim a split with the Cardinals.

Fogle posted two hits to give her four for the day, while Oehlstrom had the lone RBI on the home run.

Freshman pitcher Aubrie Lafferty (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) was saddled with the loss. Lafferty (1-2) allowed two runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts over four innings.

The Cardinals will jump out of Mountain East Conference (MEC) play with a non-conference doubleheader at Slippery Rock on Tuesday, April 13 at 3 p.m.

Wheeling will then return home for a make-up of its doubleheader with Charleston on Wednesday at 2 p.m
