Women's Golf places third at MEC Championships; Three earn All-MEC

WARREN, Ohio (April 22) - Led by a second round 78 carded by sophomore Emily Holzopfel, the Wheeling University women's golf team placed third overall at the nine-team Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championships at Avalon Lakes Golf Course Thursday.

Holzopfel rebounded from a first-round 88 to card one of only two sub-80 scores in the final round of the championship under blistery conditions. She finished the event in a tie for third place and garnered All-MEC First Team honors in the process.

Sophomore Zoila Herrera followed up her first round 83 with a second-round 86 to tie for sixth overall. She also earned All-MEC First Team honors for her performance.

Freshman Camilla Ariano posted rounds of 89 and 87 to tie for 14th overall to earn MEC Honorable Mention status.

The University of Charleston won the team championship with a score of 673. The finished just ahead of West Virginia Wesleyan (676) and Wheeling (689) in the team standings.

West Virginia Wesleyan's Kiana Toole took home medalist honors. She was the only competitor to shoot a sub-80 score in both rounds.

The tournament was originally slated to be a three-round, 54-hole event, but the second day of the championship was canceled due to snow and cold temperatures.
