MEC Weekly Honors for Hilltoppers' Martirosyan

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – After going undefeated in four matches last week, West Liberty University freshman Evelina Martirosyan was honored on Tuesday as the Mountain East Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.

Checking in at No. 12 in the ITA's most recent set of NCAA Division II Atlantic Region singles rankings, Martirosyan helped lead Coach Heather Gallagher’s WLU women to back-to-back blowout wins against Washington & Jefferson and West Virginia Wesleyan.

The native of Yerevan, Armenia got her week off to a strong start on Tuesday with a pair of wins in West Liberty’s 9-0 non-conference road romp at W&J. She teamed with fellow freshman Emma Arnal for a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles and followed that up with a 6-0 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

It was more of the same on Saturday as the Hilltoppers improved to 2-0 in the MEC with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Bobcats. Martirosyan and Gemma Cliffe combined for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and Martirosyan jump-started the Black and Gold in singles play with a convincing 6-0 6-2 triumph at No. 1 singles.

The WLU women were scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference match against Mercyhurst (Pa.) at the Washington (Pa.) Park Tennis Courts.
