INDIANAPOLIS — Ranked No. 3 in the final set of NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings, the West Liberty University men's golf team has earned its eighth consecutive NCAA Division II regional tournament berth.
According to Friday night's official release on the NCAA website, Coach Thadd Obecny's Hilltoppers will be headed to Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, N.Y. early next month to compete with 19 other teams in the combined East/Atlantic Regional.
It's one of four 20-team regionals that will set the field for the NCAA Division II Nationals. Hosted by Le Moyne (N.Y.) College, the 54-hole Atlantic/East Regional is scheduled for May 5-7 at the challenging Empire State course just outside of Rochester. The pristine 7,083-yard, par 72 layout has been ranked as one of the Top 100 public courses in the nation by Golf Digest.
The top three teams and the top two individuals not with one of the three qualifying teams from each regional will qualify to compete in the national championship tournament. An additional eight at-large team berths will be allocated based on the regions represented in last year’s head-to-head medal play portion of the championships.
Hosted by Wayne State (Mich.) and the Detroit Sports Commission, the NCAA Division II Nationals will be held May 16-20 at TPC Michigan in Detroit.
