Let's talk about the trade Neal Huntington didn't screw up

Last night Andrew McCutchen hurt his knee in a run down. It looked bad. The Phillies are saying it’s a sprained knee. Let’s hope it’s not serious. He’s a good dude.

It hurt to see Cutch go, but the deal made a lot of sense at the time and has worked out well for Pittsburgh.

Hindsight tells us that the Archer trade is a colossal failure. The Cutch deal? They nailed it.

McCutchen played 130 games with the Giants before being flipped to the Yankees. He's been good this year for the Phillies, but not as good as Bryan Reynolds.

Both Reynolds and Kyle Crick came back in return. Crick is one of the lone bright spots in the bullpen. He’s got an ERA under two and struck out 21 in 19 innings. Last year he had a 2.39 ERA and 65 K’s in 60 IP. He’s a good bullpen arm.

Bryan Reynolds is hitting .350 with an OPS of .984. The dude can flat hit. I buy into this kid. I’ve watched him with my eyes. That’s important. BUT, I’ve also seen his minor league stats. They back up what I’m seeing. The dude has never hit below .300 at any professional level. He’s a stud at the dish.

Cutch was on the down slope in his last two years in the Burgh. He’s having a good year for the Phillies this year, but Reynolds has the same WAR in almost a half the plate appearances.

Reynolds will be one of the Pirates outfielders of the future. McCutchen would have been too expensive and not as productive. Huntington’s done a lot well. He’s done a lot poorly. Put the McCutchen trade in the win column.
