WLU Women Place 3rd at MEC Championships

11 All-Conference citations for Hilltopper track teams

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women’s track team notched a third-place finish here Tuesday as the Mountain East Conference Track Championships wrapped up its three-day run at Morris Stadium on the campus of Glenville State College.

The Lady Hilltoppers held off a late charge from Charleston to place third in the final team standings with 125 points. Wheeling won the women’s title with 189 points while West Virginia Wesleyan was second at 153.5. Charleston (121) and Davis & Elkins (54.5) rounded out the top five. The West Liberty men placed seventh in the nine-team field.

One school record fell during Tuesday’s final day of competition. Hailey Carreon’s third-place time of 15.04 seconds in the women’s 100 hurdles shaved three-tenths of a second off her own school record set earlier this spring.

West Liberty collected 11 All-MEC Team berths during the post-tournament awards ceremony. Hannah Kemp was a first-team All-MEC honoree after winning the women’s 10,000 meters and picked up a pair of second-team All-MEC honors on Tuesday with runner-up finishes in the 1,500 and 5,000-meter runs.

Kelsi Hulit also earned multiple honors, picking up a first-team All-MEC award with a win in the women’s discus and getting honorable mention All-MEC with a third-place finish in the shot put.

Also earning second-team All-MEC recognition for the WLU women were Nichole Groseclose as runner-up in the 3,000 steeplechase and Aubree Story, who placed second in the high jump with a school- and meet-record leap of 5 feet, 5 inches. Carreon received honorable mention for her third-place finish in the 100 hurdles.

Adam O’Donnell was the lone first-team All-MEC honoree for the Hilltopper men after his runaway win in the decathlon with a school-record – and NCAA provisional qualifying – total of 6,343 points. Second-team All-MEC honors went to Michael Harriman with a meet-record runner-up finish at 800 meters, Danah Phillips with a meet-record runner-up finish in the 1500, and Gary Braithwaite with a runner-up finish in the javelin.
