Men's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw Against Frostburg State

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University men's soccer team battled Frostburg State to a scoreless draw this afternoon at West Family Athletic Complex.

The Hilltoppers move to 1-1-1 on the young season with the result.

Noah Underwood made four saves on all four shots on goal by the Bobcats to keep the clean sheet for the Hilltoppers. Meanwhile, the Frostburg State defense had similar success defending West Liberty's three on-goal shots.

Chances were a premium in the match that was played under a constant drizzle.

The Bobcats had the first opportunity of the game off a corner kick in the 14th minute, but Underwood was able to fend off the shot. West Liberty got a corner chance two minutes later and it resulted in a Jan Goebel header that missed high.

In the 39th minute, Ashton Farnsworth leaked ahead of the Frostburg defense after a free kick in the defensive end for the Hilltoppers. Farnsworth's shot was knocked out by a diving attempt from the Bobcat keeper.

The opening six minutes of the second half featured three scoring chances for West Liberty. Vitor Otsuka missed wide in the 47th minute, Farnsworth had his second shot of the match saved by the keeper in the 50th minute, and a header from Cormac McGinley missed high after a corner in the 51st minute.

The Hilltoppers were forced to finish the final 15 minutes with 10 players after a second yellow card was assessed against Danilo Tavares.

It was a chippy match throughout with 28 total fouls being whistled, 15 on West Liberty and 13 on Frostburg State. The official also handed out nine yellow cards with five going to the Hilltoppers and four to the Bobcats.

West Liberty will wrap up its three-game homestand with a matchup against Notre Dame College on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 pm from West Family Athletic Complex.
