Black People Magic: Big Honor from the Mavs for Mark Aguirre

Celebrating the magic of Chicago’s own, former NBA star Mark Aguirre

Mark got the news Wednesday that the Dallas Mavericks will retire his #24 jersey on January 29th during a special halftime ceremony when the team plays the Charlotte Hornets.

The 65-year-old Chicago native and West Sider was chosen as the first overall pick in the 1981 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks after playing three years at DePaul University. Mark played in the NBA until 1994, was a three-time All-Star for Dallas, and won two championships with the Detroit Pistons.

He was inducted in the DePaul Athletics Hall of fame in 1996, the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. Mark joined the DePaul University Athletics staff in 2023.

When Mavericks’ governor Patrick Dumont gave Mark one of his green #24 jerseys in a special presentation Wednesday and said that no other Maverick will ever wear that number again, Mark said, “Wow, this is too much for me… my kids always wanted to witness this. Was this ever going to happen? I’ll talk to them all night tonight. Daddy’s jersey is retired. Wow, man. This is big. This is huge.”

& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
