Cardinals Clipped Twice by Fairmont State

WHEELING, W.Va. (April 25) - The Cardinals dropped a pair of close games to Fairmont State Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. The Falcons took game one 2-1, before completing the sweep by dealing the Cards a 3-0 loss in game two.

Wheeling (9-31, 6-22 MEC) fell behind 2-0 on a run in the first and third innings by Fairmont State (21-11, 17-11 MEC).

The Cardinals were down to their final three outs when freshman Cassie Feyh (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley) hit her first-career home run to make the score 2-1. The next three batters were retired in order to allow the Falcons to claim game one.

Redshirt-freshman pitcher Abby Bumbico (Martins Ferry, Ohio/Martins Ferry) limited Fairmont State to two runs on five hits with one strikeout over seven innings to fall to 1-2 on the season.

Feyh led the offense with two hits, including the solo home run.

Game two was a pitcher's duel that headed into the seventh inning with the game remaining scoreless. Fairmont State finally broke through with three runs on four hits to take the lead.

Wheeling put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the final two batters were sat down to end the game.

Sophomore pitcher Madison Macy (Metamora, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) yielded three runs on nine hits with a strikeout in a complete-game effort.

The Cardinals will wrap up the season this Friday, April 30 when the team welcomes Notre Dame for a Mountain East Conference (MEC) doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
