Women win three events on first day of MEC Championships

GLENVILLE, W.Va. (May 2) - The Cardinal Women's Track & Field team won a trio of events on day one of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Outdoor Championships Sunday.

The Cardinals are currently leading the nine-team championships field with 64 points, while West Liberty is in second with 36 points.

Wheeling claimed the top-four spots in the pole vault. Senior Danielle Stewart (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) established a new MEC Championship Meet record in the pole vault when she cleared 3.85 meters on her first attempt. Freshman Keala McCurry (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) took second at 3.60 meters, Kimbria Lance (Fowler, Mich./Fowler) took third at 3.20 meters, while Gemma Starrs (Marion, Ohio/River Valley) took fourth at 3.20 meters (failed attempt).

Senior Liz Fleming (Washington, Pa./Trinity) established an NCAA Provisional mark to win the hammer throw. Her mark of 54.31 meters won the event, while freshman Princess Love (Houston, Texas/C.E. King) took fourth at 41.97 meters.

Freshman Jaci Rife (Springfield, Ohio/Tecumseh) won the long jump with a personal-record mark of 5.68 meters.

The Cardinals will return to the Sue Morris Track tomorrow, Monday, May 3 for day two. Events in the multis will begin in the morning, while a live stream of the championships will begin around 3:30 p.m.
