MEC names Dominguez co-Player of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (May 3) - After hitting a scorching .706 last week, Wheeling University third baseman Luis Dominguez (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) was named the Mountain East Conference (MEC) co-Player of the Week announced the league office Monday afternoon.

Dominguez helped the Cardinals go 5-2 last week to clinch the MEC North Division crown. He extended his hitting-streak to 21 games after going 16 for 23 at the dish with 12 RBIs, six doubles and eight runs scored. He was also 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts and drew five walks during the week.

In a 26-8 game two win on Saturday at Alderson Broaddus, Dominguez was 5-for-5 with three doubles and seven RBIs. He missed game one in order to walk and receive his degree at Wheeling's Commencement earlier in the day and drove to Philippi after the ceremony to help the Cardinals clinch the division. The following day Dominguez went 2-for-2 in game one versus the Battlers with a double.

The Bronx native opened the week going 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs in a 7-5 win over Notre Dame on Monday.

Dominguez leads the team and ranks sixth in the MEC with a .396 batting average this season.

He is the third Cardinal and second hitter to earn a MEC weekly honor this season. Senior closer Albert Baez (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek) was named MEC Pitcher of the Week on March 29, while junior outfielder Chris Iazzetta (Clinton, N.J./IMG Academy) earned hitter of the week honors on April 19. Iazzetta went on to earn the National Division II Hitter of the Week award that week.

Dominguez shared the MEC Player of the Week award with Concord's Zack Saryeldin, who hit 8-for-14 with three home runs and six RBIs to help the Mountain Lions split with nationally-ranked Charleston this past weekend.

The Cardinals will wrap up the regular-season with a split-series against West Liberty (18-17, 16-12 MEC) next weekend. Wheeling will travel to West Liberty on Friday, May 7 for a doubleheader, before welcoming the Hilltoppers to the JB Chambers Complex on Sunday, May 9 to conclude the series. Games on both dates are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
