Afolayanka earns All-MEC Honorable Mention laurels

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (May 5) - Wheeling University men's soccer freshman forward Richard Afolayanka (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale) was named to the All-Mountain East Conference (MEC) Honorable Mention list announced the league office Wednesday afternoon.

Afolayanka led the Cardinals with three goals and six points while starting all eight games during the abbreviated spring 2021 season.

The Uniondale, New York native scored twice, including a game-winning goal in the 85th-minute, to give Wheeling a 3-2 win over Alderson Broaddus in late March. Afolayanka was later named the MEC Men's Soccer Player of the Week for his efforts in that game.

He also scored in the 57th-minute of the team's 4-2 loss to nationally-ranked Davis & Elkins.

UC's Christos Charalambous was selected as the league's Offensive Player of the Year after netting nine goals and providing six assists in the team's 10 games this season. Daniel Smee, in his first season at the helm, was selected as the league's Coach of the Year. Charleston went a perfect 10-0 on the year and took home both conference trophies.

Notre Dame's Antonio Bittencourt doubled as both the MEC Defender of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
