Anderson earns Second Team All-Great Midwest
INDIANAPOLIS (May 6) - Wheeling University men's lacrosse defender Mathew Anderson (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) was named a Second-Team All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference selection announced the league office Friday afternoon.
Anderson led the team and ranked second in the Great Midwest with 2.0 caused turnovers per game. He finished the season with 22 caused turnovers in 11 games, including a season-high four at Davis & Elkins.
The Gorham, Maine native also slotted second on the team and eighth in the Great Midwest with 4.36 ground balls per game. He added face-off duties late in the season and won 20 of 62 draws (.323) while using a long stick.
Anderson caught the attention of the league early in the season when he posted three caused turnovers and scooped up a pair of groundballs in the season-opener against Chowan. He was later named the Great Midwest Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
Anderson becomes the first Wheeling all-conference award winner since 2018. That season the Cardinals had eight All-Great Midwest honorees, including current National Lacrosse League (NLL) forward Dereck Downs who earned first-team accolades that season. Downs currently plays for the New York Riptide.
