Llanas steps down as Wheeling Women's Basketball Coach

WHEELING, W.Va. (May 27) - Citing personal reasons, Mike Llanas has resigned as the head women's basketball coach at Wheeling University.

"My time at Wheeling was rewarding both personally and professionally," said Llanas. "My family will miss the staff and most of all, my players. I look forward to see the upward growth of the women's basketball program and the university."

Llanas spent three seasons on the Cardinal sidelines. The team made appearances in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament the past two seasons as it improved each year under the Toldeo native. This past season, the team achieved a 9-9 mark and an appearance in the MEC Tournament Semifinals.

"Mike is a tremendous coach who has made an indelible impact on the landscape of women's basketball here at Wheeling," said Wheeling University President, Ginny Favede. "In the years he has served as our head coach, he has influenced the lives of many student-athletes and become an essential part of the fabric of our community. His caring presence will be greatly missed. Coach Llanas personifies the purpose of our university - to be men and women for others. Mike, Kelly, and their children always will be part of the Cardinal family, and we wish them the very best as they enter the next stage of their lives."

"I enjoyed getting to know Coach Llanas and work with him over the past five months," added Director of Athletics, Patrick Snively. "He is a good man and works hard to make everyone around him better. I wish him nothing but success as he moves on to spend more time with his family."

A search for the new Wheeling University head women's basketball coach has begun.
