Fleming finishes 13th at Outdoor National Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. (May 29) - Senior Liz Fleming (Washington, Pa./Trinity) concluded her prolific career with a 13th-place showing in the shot put at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University Saturday evening.

Fleming posted a heave of 13.83 meters (45 feet, 4.5 inches) on her first attempt. She fouled on both of her ensuing attempts and did not qualify to compete in the finals and placed 13th overall, two slots ahead of where she was seeded.

Fleming closes out her Wheeling career with school records in the shot put, hammer throw, and the weight throw (indoor). She also was the 2020 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and the 2021 MEC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. There was not a 2020 Outdoor or a 2021 Indoor MEC Championship held due to the pandemic.

Fleming was one of four competitors from a MEC institution to compete at the NCAA National Championships and the only female student-athlete from a member school to participate.

West Texas A&M junior Zada Swoops established a new championship meet record with a mark of 17.59 meters (57 feet, 8.5 inches) to claim the individual title in the shot put. Swoops' throw was over six feet further than the runner-up in the event.
