Rugby Keeps Offense Going in Rout Over WVU

Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Rugby team (3-0) has been bringing the offense to their opponents this season. That strategy continued on Saturday when they beat WVU 70-5 in their first home game of the Fall 2021 season.

They brought 15s play back to Bishop Schmitt Field for the first time in a few years and got the community involved. The team visited Steenrod Elementary school this week and honored them on the field at halftime of their game. They put on a show for the students, scoring seven tried and holding WVU off the board until the final minute of play.

It took the Cardinals just seven minutes on the first half to find their way on the board. By halftime, the Cardinals had built a 34-0 lead and had a pretty good handle on the visiting Mountaineers. They would continue to run all over the Mountaineers in the second half, putting up 36 points and led 70-0 in the final three minutes of the game. WVU would score their only try with a minute left on the game clock, but by then the damage had been done as Wheeling grabbed the victory.

It is the second time this season that Wheeling has eclipsed the 70 point mark, and now ups their season total to 196 points scored in three games. They are outscoring opponents 196-20 in those games as their offense is effective while their defense sows a nice job of keeping the opposition off the board.

The Wheeling University Rugby team will be back in action next Sunday when they go on the road to face Notre Dame College at 1 PM.
