Record-Setting Win for West Liberty Men
FROSTBURG, Md. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team put an exclamation point at the end of their abbreviated spring schedule here Friday night with a record-setting 5-0 blowout of Frostburg State in a mutual season finale at Bobcat Stadium.
Coach Sean Regan's Hilltoppers (4-4-0) set program records for goals scored in a game, goals scored in a half and margin of victory in dominating the host Bobcats (2-6-0).
Frostburg State kept things close in the early going but Josh Yeaman's goal in the 39th minute - a pretty left-footed flick on from 15 yards out off an assist from Vitot Otsuka - sent West Liberty off the pitch with a 1-0 halftime lead and the floodgates were about to open.
When play resumed, Otsuka needed less than 90 seconds to volley in a rebound off a Bernardo Vilchis shot and the Hilltoppers began to pull away.
Vilchis wouldn't be denied again as he scored back-to-back goals off assists from Mark Donnelly in the 59th and 70th minute to push the count to 4-0. Danilo Tavares headed home a cross from Daniel Rovira in the 81st minute to conclude the scoring.
West Liberty outshot Frostburg State by a 19-11 count on the evening with a whopping 12-2 edge in the second half. Noah Underwood made four saves in net to record the shutout.
