WLU Women Shut Out Wheeling, 3-0
WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team exploded for three first-half goals and coasted to a 3-0 shutout of Wheeling here Friday night in a mutual Mountain East Conference season finale at Bishop Schmitt Stadium.
Coach Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (2-4-2) got off to a fast start, clanging a shot off the crossbar less than two minutes after the opening kickoff and breaking the scoring ice before the game was four minutes old.
Alyssa Rhinaman drew first blood for the Black and Gold, dropping a well-placed shot just over the hands of the Cardinal keeper after running onto a Millie Colbran leave just above the top of the box.
Rhinaman made it 2-0 in the 26th minute when she corralled a loose ball in the box following a Hilltopper free kick and ripped a drive into the middle of the net.
Freshman Georgia Richardson gave West Liberty an insurmountable 3-0 halftime lead with a 15-yard laser off an assist from Kassidy Wolfe in the 35th minute.
The Hilltoppers finished with a 13-11 edge in total shots but had a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. Olivia Montgomery saved both of Wheeling's on-target attempts to notch her second shutout win of the season in goal for West Liberty.
