Cards bounced twice at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. (April 23) - The Wheeling University softball team was knocked off twice by division-leading Frostburg State Friday afternoon in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. The Cardinals lost 4-1 in the opener, before being dealt a 13-3 loss in game two.

Wheeling (9-28, 6-19 MEC) was limited to four hits in the game one loss. The Cardinals got their lone run when redshirt-freshman Autumn Oehlstrom (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) connected on an RBI-double in the fifth inning to make the score 2-1.

Frostburg State (20-8, 18-5 MEC) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to rebuild its lead to 4-1.

The Cardinals jumped on the board with three runs in the top of the first inning behind RBIs by redshirt-freshman Alisa Shelt (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon), freshman Brooke Slomkowski (Toms River, N.J./East), and redshirt-freshman Abby Bumbico (Martins Ferry, Ohio/Martins Ferry).

The Bobcats countered with a run in the bottom of the first, five in the second and seven in the third to pull away for a 13-3 run-rule win in five innings.

Freshman Cassi Roman (Chino Hills, Calif,/Ayala) led the Cardinals with three hits, including a double, in three at bats.

The Cardinals will return home on Sunday, April 25 for a MEC doubleheader against Fairmont State at 12 p.m.
