Hilltoppers’ Campbell is MEC Player of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – After sparking the West Liberty University baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Mountain East Conference North Division rival Frostburg State on Sunday, hard-hitting senior Brian Campbell has been honored as the MEC Player of the Week.
Campbell, a senior first baseman from Wheeling, W.Va., had a career day on Sunday as the Black and Gold rallied to an 8-6 win in the opener before hammering out a 17-2 decision in the second game.
The WLU veteran was 6-for-9 at the plate on the day with two homers, two doubles and two singles for 15 total bases. He drove in 9 runs, scored 5 more and even went 2-for-2 on stolen base attempts.
Campbell also showed a knack for delivering in the clutch. With West Liberty trailing 6-2 in the first game, Campbell jump-started the Hilltopper offense with a 5th-inning solo homer before belting a 2-run circuit shot in the sixth frame to snap a 6-6 tie and complete the comeback.
West Liberty and Frostburg State were scheduled to close out their weekend series on Monday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Kovalick Field.
